A new home for Venezuelan refugees in Brasília thanks to a partnership between AVSI Brasil, CNBB, and IMDH

Published by CNBB.org.br | Brasília – Thanks to a partnership with the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), and the Institute of Migration and Human Rights (Instituto Migração e Direitos Humanos – IMDH), AVSI Brasil will soon open a  reception center in Brasilia to provide temporary housing for Venezuelan migrants and refugees, who will arrive in Brazil’s capital with guaranteed jobs.

The initiative is part of the Welcomed Through Work project. Funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), the project helps Venezuelan refugees living in the reception center in Boa Vista to move to other cities in Brazil where there are more job opportunities.

The center will be located inside a building made available by CNBB and will be managed by AVSI Brasil, with social assistance support provided by IMDH. The center will work as a temporary residence for families and individuals in a rotating system. Up to 15 families will live in the space for three months. A set of multidisciplinary activities will also help them integrate into a new city and culture.

According to CNBB Vice-President, Bishop Mario Antonio da Silva, Venezuelans are still migrating to Brazil, and everybody should do their part to accommodate them.

“The lack of employment, hunger, insecurity, and diseases are putting Venezuelans to the test, but they still hope they can have a new life in Brazil,” says the Bishop. “Here, they can have a decent place to live, get a job, and integrate into our society.”

The reception center will be renovated and should be opening by October 2020.
