From Fear to Confidence: How One Mother’s Journey Reflects a Community’s Transformation

When Silvia joined Fundación Sembrar’s Education at Home (PelCa) program in 2023 with her daughter Greta, she carried more questions than answers.

After more than sixteen years since raising her first child, becoming the mother of a young child again felt overwhelming. Fear often guided her decisions. She worried constantly that Greta might get sick or get hurt. Unsure of herself and hesitant to speak in front of others, Silvia kept to the sidelines during group meetings.

“I got nervous. I felt out of control,” she recalls.

Today, Silvia is almost unrecognizable from the woman who first entered the program.

She actively participates in workshops, shares ideas with other mothers, and even encourages her husband to take a more active role in parenting. Most importantly, she has learned to trust both herself and her daughter.

“I am learning, and at the same time I am teaching my daughter,” she says.

Silvia’s story is just one of many that illustrate the impact of Fundación Sembrar’s work in the vulnerable communities of Pisulí and La Roldós, Quito.

Over the past year, the program reached 258 children under the age of five and 257 vulnerable families. Through weekly educational sessions, home visits, parenting workshops, and community activities, families were given the tools they need to nurture their children’s development and strengthen their own resilience.

Change did not happen all at once. It appeared gradually in the everyday moments shared between parents and children at home. Children who once struggled to express themselves began sharing their ideas, asking questions, and engaging more confidently with the world around them. Through PelCa’s play-based learning methodology, they reached age-appropriate developmental milestones, particularly in communication, critical thinking, and social skills. Parents spoke proudly of children who showed greater curiosity, took initiative in simple daily tasks, and demonstrated growing confidence in making decisions on their own.

These changes did not stop with the children. As caregivers participated in workshops on positive parenting, conflict resolution, and financial education, they too began a journey of growth. Many parents gained the confidence to face everyday challenges with new tools and perspectives. Conversations at home became more constructive, parents became more involved in their children’s learning, and families reported stronger relationships built on communication, trust, and mutual support. For many caregivers, the program was not only an opportunity to learn new skills but also a chance to rediscover confidence in their ability to guide and nurture their children.

Home visits ensured that no family faced challenges alone. Educators provided personalized guidance, monitored children’s development, connected families to health services, and distributed food baskets, clothing, hygiene supplies, and school materials. Nutrition monitoring and vaccination support helped identify and address critical health needs among participating children.

Equally powerful were the moments families spent together. Birthday celebrations, cultural events, educational outings, and vacation camps created opportunities for parents and children to learn, play, and build stronger relationships. These activities also fostered community support networks and encouraged greater participation from fathers, strengthening shared responsibility for children’s well-being.

What began as a program to support early childhood development has become something much bigger: a community where families grow together.

For Silvia, the experience can be summarized in two simple words: growth and development.

For Fundación Sembrar, her journey represents the heart of the program’s mission: empowering families so that children can thrive, not only today, but for years to come.
